The MLC Improves Its Data Initiative

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) has announced that four music-data companies are joining its Data Quality Initiative (DQI), which will improve participation and accuracy in its musical-works database.

The MLC was designated by the U.S. Register of Copyrights in 2019 pursuant to the Music Modernization Act. Beginning in January 2021, it will process and pay out mechanical royalties from streaming in the U.S. to songwriters or publishers at no cost.

By joining the DQI, Blokur, Exactuals, Music Data Services and TuneRegistry are making it easier for their users and customers to participate, check data accuracy and correct discrepancies, thus ensuring MLC members receive their rightful mechanical royalties.

“We’re excited to work with a wide variety of companies that deal with music data, be they tech startups or legacy players in the music space, because we want to help as many of our members as possible participate in our Data Quality Initiative,” said Dae Bogan, Head of Third-Party Partnerships at The MLC.
